An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered. – GK Chesterton
Unfortunately, 2016 has been labelled “the worst year ever” by many. Sure, things happened. And in our attempt to understand everything, we have labelled things “good” and “bad”. Thus, the choice of how we look at things is the switch that fills our life with light or darkness.
At DiscoverHER Project, we are dedicating this month to ADVENTURE. With the negativity surrounding 2016, we think it’s time to place our finger on the switch, and adventure into 2017 with more energy to explore who we are and drive ourselves towards success.
Here are 5 steps to make This Year an Adventure (you may need a journal for this):
Step 1. Make (and write down!) your own definition of what “adventure” means to you.
Is is travelling somewhere you’ve never been before? Exploring an unknown territory?
Is it an exciting experience? An activity out of the ordinary?
This personal definition will establish the first identification of what an adventurous year will look like for you.
Step 2. Embrace your life adventure by reconnecting with yourself.
One way to do this is through defining your own core values (we can’t stress this enough!). Make the most of each day by writing down your core values everyday so that every decision coincides with your values, providing a path that compliments your identity and adventure.
Step 3. Celebrate where you’ve been.
Sit back and think about where you were today last year, and even 5 years ago. I can guarantee that by doing this thoughtfully, you will be surprised and likely pleased.
Step 4. Plan. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Set goals. List accomplishments you want to make.
For these goals to stick, keep this list with you and read it or re-write it every day for at least one month. Make the adventure happen by never letting your goals out of sight.
Step 5. Write down something you want to accomplish but have been holding off, and actually plan it!
This in-depth goal setting exercise will help you map out what you will need to do to accomplish your adventure. To then make yourself accountable, share your adventure with friends and family.
To further guide your mindset, here’s some questions to ask yourself:
- What adventures will you go on?
- What do you want to experience this year?
- How do you want to feel?
- How you will take on daily adventures?
- What is your outlook on an adventure?
- What is your outlook on a challenging experience?
- How can you a challenging situation more of an adventure as opposed to an ordeal?
- How can you live your life as the adventure it deserves to be?
Remember, you have the power to make life an adventure. Enjoy the year ahead with the best intentions, and don’t forget to celebrate along the way. We’re rooting for you!
