Have you ever wondered what it means to find your authentic self?
When I think of the word fearless, I think of the people who exude confidence. The people that aren’t afraid to show vulnerability and won’t allow anyone or anything stand in the way of crushing their goals. I think of people who are constantly striving to be a better person than they were the day before. To me, being fearless means believing in yourself, challenging yourself and staying true to yourself.
Finding your passion isn’t just about careers and money. It’s about finding your authentic self. The one you’ve buried beneath others needs.
I remember being asked what my true authentic self was. I then remember pausing and thinking, pardon me? What on earth does that mean? I had no idea what they were trying to ask let alone how to answer the question. They asked again but this time a little different. Who are you and what is your purpose? This time I understood better but I was still like a deer in headlights! I guess I never really thought of who I wanted to be as a person because I was always busy following societal norms and I never stopped to think about me and what I wanted in life. I was so intrigued by this new perspective that I started jotting things down and created my own unique life-map.
Find Your Authentic Self By Asking Yourself These Questions:
- What are five things that I value most in life?
- What are my main five goals in life?
- What are three of my strengths and three of my weaknesses?
- What are my hobbies?
- What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?
- And finally, if I was granted one wish to accomplish one thing or achieve any goal, what would I dare to dream if I knew I could not fail?
Having this template and seeing my answers was so incredible. It was like I was a whole different person then who I was portraying to the world. The wheels started to spin and I knew that if I wasn’t staying true to myself and not listening to what I really wanted, I was never going to feel complete happiness. So, I put my words into motion and started following my map. The layout was simple. My core values and goals were defined and whenever I started to get overwhelmed or stuck, I would revisit my map to reground myself. I found myself getting into routine and doing great but something was still missing. I was playing it safe and living in my comfort zone. Until one day I decided that I wanted more. I wanted to be more. I quit my job, went on a trip and for once in my life I was living in the present. I started living my life fearlessly.
Fear tricks us into living a boring life. – Donald Miller
When I came back to Canadian soil, it was like I was a whole new person and I discovered that I needed to let go of my fear of failure to pursue my dreams. I needed to snap out of it and start believing in myself. I refuse to settle just because I feel a little uncomfortable. I will choose to give it my all even if there is a possibility of failing and I choose to keep challenging myself in order to keep growing. I refuse to let the word failure scare me. The word sounds so harsh when in fact, we choose to view it that way. We shouldn’t be viewing failure as a negative but rather as progression. It’s okay to fail, it just means that you’re learning and creating the best finishing product! Yes, it can hurt your ego but remember that you’re already two steps further by pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. It took me a while to gain that girl-boss confidence and that hustle attitude but I swear once you’ve committed yourself into being that go-getter, there’s nothing that can stand in your way, nothing can stop you.
Desire is the greatest motivator, set a goal that you desire. Make it something so that when you accomplish it, it is really a dream come true. Make sure you write it down. Until it is committed to paper it’s not a goal, it is simply a wish. Now believe. You need to believe you can achieve your goal and you need to believe in yourself. Create your own life map, make your own rules!
It’s not who are are that holds you back. It’s who you think you’re not.
