I used to dread updating my resume. PRetty much, I would do a major brain dump about my skills and experience without really putting much thought into it; thinking that the more information I put down, the better my chances are at being selected. I kept it simple – black and white with clean lines. Legible font, usually Georgia, Century Gothic, or Tahoma, and then formatted whatever that needed to be formatted.
My strategy sucked.
Nowdays, who wants to read a boring and chunky resume that lacked personality? … Nobody.
Employers will not give more than 3 second of their time looking at your resume if it doesn’t catch their eye immediately. They have hundreds of other applications to go through after all, so you got to make yours count.

More and more now, employers want to hire a candidate that fits in with their corporate culture. Most skills are coachable, but personality isn’t. It took me five years to learn that my resume is more than just a summary of my work experience. I can tell you that I get excited to upgrade my resume now because I am proud of what I have put on paper. There is a persona behind my resume – it represents who I am and what I do.
